It is an operational department in a hotel, which is responsible for cleanliness, maintenance, aesthetic upkeep of rooms, public areas, back areas and the surroundings. Housekeepers handle light cleaning needed for the upkeep of homes as well as commercial buildings, such as offices, hotels, and hospitals. Typically they'll replace bedding, clean rooms, halls and bathrooms, vacuum, sweep, mop, replace toiletries and make beds.

In hotels, the housekeeping division is often referred to as the 'face of an accommodation'. This is because the quality of room service and various other hotel facilities are their responsibility. Additionally, they also directly interact with guests, for example, when cleaning rooms.
